Frequently Ask Questions

You’re eligible to become a sponsor under family sponsorship programs only when you meet the following requirements:

  • You’re 18 years of age or older.
  • You and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that demonstrates that you can provide financial support for your relative.
  • You can provide financial support for the family member for three years from the date they become a permanent resident.
  • If you’re sponsoring children, you must provide financial support for a dependent child.
  • You must not be incarcerated or charged with a serious offence.
  • You must not be bankrupt.
  • You must not be under a removal order if you’re a Permanent Resident.

If you’re living in Canada as a citizen or permanent resident and meet the requirements, you can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner (restrictions apply), conjugal partner (restrictions apply), dependent children, parents (conditions apply), grandparents (conditions apply), brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are under 18 years of age and not married, and any other relative of any age or relationship (conditions apply).

Spouses and partners are allowed to work in Canada while their sponsorship application is processed. But the sponsored spouse  must have valid temporary status as a visitor, student or worker. The sponsored person is also required to sign a contract that demonstrates that the sponsored person will repay the government for any social assistance payments he or she received. You can sponsor siblings to get permanent residency in Canada if both their parents have passed away, and the sibling is less than 18 years old.
